Top Rank’s Todd DuBoef thinks Mikaela Mayer has real potential to become one of the biggest Women’s boxing stars in the US and could debut in the UK too in 2022.
Mikaela Mayer has unified the WBO super-featherweight and IBF championships in her recent fight against Maiva Hamadouche and is eyeing the undisputed title.
“A decade ago, we were not sure about her journey to the top, and we were worried about what to do in the women’s category, but she proved herself and sold me on it”, says Top Rank’s DuBoef, her promoter.
“She has an out of the ring personality, but inside the ring, I wasn’t sure, and then her last fight was so sensational.”
“She has delivered in so many fights.”
“Nobody could be pointed out as the face of boxing, but Mikaela is an important part of US women’s boxing. As Savannah Marshall and Katie Taylor are in the UK, Mikaela and Claressa Shields have done a lot in the US”, he added.
“After the performance, like in her last fight, Mikaela grips you.”
“She has real potential in America and I would like to bring her here to the UK.”
Mikaela Mayer, the unified IBF and WBO super-featherweight champion, sees changes in the upper echelon of women’s boxing.
“It’s not Katie Taylor anymore,” she said while talking about the world’s No. 1 pound for pound fighter.
“I haven’t seen her perform in her past few fights and it makes me sad because I want a fight with Katie and for that, I would go up to 135lbs to challenge her.”
“I want to get here before she descends. She has had a great career”, Mikaela Mayers said.
Mayer’s prominent opponents in the super-featherweight division are Alycia Baumgardner (WBC) and Choi Hyun-Mi (WBA).
“For some reason, she has this entitlement that it’s her time,” Mayers said about Baumgardner.
“I came for Terri Harper when she was the champion, and now I’m coming for Baumgardner,” she said.
“It isn’t personal, she’s trying to make this like high school, saying ‘you are jealous,’ but I just wanted the biggest fight possible.”
“She didn’t mention my name after winning her belt and she doesn’t want to fight me,” Mayer claimed.
Mikaela Mayer expects that these two divisional rivals should fight each other first. On that, she said, “Where is Choi? She isn’t active.”
“She has held onto her belt and is the longest-reigning champion in female boxing, but she doesn’t put it on the line.”
“She is not a top player.”
“I’m seeing Baumgardner win and two Americans for the undisputed title would be a big fight”, she said.
Though Baumgardner has made history as part of the first female boxing commentary team with Crystina Poncher outside of the ring. But it is about being inside the ring where she is looking to return in March and wishes to become undisputed in 2022, where Mayer is waiting for her.
