Why You Need BJJ Gis
What is a Gi?
- A gi is a martial arts outfit worn in judo, karate, and jiu-jitsu.
- A gi includes a set of long pants, a long-sleeve top, and a thick belt.
- The first gis were made in Japan and came only in white to represent a pure spirit.
- Martial arts gis share the same parts but can differ in length and durability depending on the specific discipline.
Design of a Good BJJ Gi
- BJJ gis are built tough to prevent tearing when pulled and grabbed during matches.
- BJJ gis rest close to the skin to reduce the loose fabric your opponent could take advantage of.
- A BJJ gi that suits your body type, height, and weight will ensure an optimal fit.
What are Elite Sports Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gis?
Elite Sports BJJ gis are made from high-quality canvas cotton (60%) and polyester (40%). This build ensures the clothes fit comfortably around your body. The combinations of fabrics make the jiu jitsu gis highly flexible and allow for full freedom of movement.
The BJJ tops and pants are pre-shrunk to keep the clothes from going a size down after a trip in the washing machine. However, it is best to hand wash and dry on a clothesline to ensure they last longer.
The jiu jitsu gis are designed with high-quality stitching, badges, and contour lines to make them look rugged. The seams are sewn with a 400 gsm Pearl Weave construction to prevent them from tearing due to the gis being handled roughly.
The Elite Sports Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gis are available between sizes 0 to 5. Size 0 fits fighters below 5 feet tall, while size 5 is perfect for fighters over 6 feet tall. The size chart for reference takes gender, age, height, and weight into account.
The Elite Sports BJJ gis come in multiple colors, some IBJJF approved gis and others stylistically unique.
BJJ Gi Colors: For men and kids, they can choose from a range of bjj gi colors, including White, Black, Blue, Navy, Green, Gray, Yellow, and Red.
For women, they can have their pick of women bjj gi colors, including White, Black, Pink, Purple, and Blue.
Elite Sports BJJ Gis: Improved Performance
Despite the long length of the jacket sleeves and the pant legs, the Elite BJJ gis are designed to hug the body tightly to make it harder for your opponent to grab onto anything. The collars and sleeves stick close to your skin underneath rather than hanging loosely while you move.
The Elite Jiu Jitsu gis are highly breathable, allowing air to flow throughout to help keep you cool when working out. There is enough room in the sleeves and pant legs to stretch your arms and legs as far as possible.
The sweat-wicking feature absorbs your sweat without causing discomfort. The sweat absorbed into the BJJ gis help keep you cool so you can focus on training. The fabric has a smooth feel against your skin, reducing the risk of abrasions when rolling on the mat.
Though you will not wear a Jiu Jitsu gi outside of gyms, practicing how to fight while wearing one could help prepare you to defend yourself in real life. Though you may not be attacked on the street for most of your life, knowing how to deal with larger opponents could help you out in a pinch.
Elite Jiu Jitsu Gis: Comfort & Durability
When you work out in an Elite Sports BJJ gi, you are going to sweat a lot. Most of your sweat will be soaked into the gis rather than left on your skin. Luckily, the fabric keeps the uniforms from smelling almost immediately. Also, the fabric will prevent bacteria from growing on the surface that could cause rashes or skin infections. If you are worried about chafing, the BJJ gis have a rash guard along the back that ensures the fabric slides without causing friction against your skin, reducing skin irritation.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How to Select a BJJ Gi?
A gi is the term for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uniform worn during training and competitions. When selecting a gi, it is important to consider fitment, the IBJJF-approved sizing, and colors. A true-to-size gi ensures comfort and flexibility on the mats, improving athletic performance. The bottom of the gi top should reach your thighs, the sleeves should reach the waist, the bottom of the pants should rest just above the ankles, and the belt should not exceed a width of 5 cm. Oversized or loose gis can look unprofessional and hinder movement.
Use the four-finger test to check whether the gi’s sleeves are the right length. Extend your arm, bend four fingers backward, and try to touch your wrist. If the sleeves do not reach your fingers, your gi will not be considered IBJJF-approved. While you may be allowed to train in academies, you won’t be able to compete at the highest levels.
A good BJJ gi is crafted from high-quality cotton, preferably with a pearl weave. Super thick and tough gis make grappling difficult for the wearer, their training partners, and their opponents. Maintaining your gi is required since torn ones are not allowed at academies or IBJJF tournaments. BJJ gis are also available in a wide range of colors. While training, you can wear a gi of any color unless there is a strict color policy at your BJJ academy. However, if you want to compete in an IBJJF competition, you must wear a white, blue, or black Jiu-Jitsu gi depending on the division you will fight in. Before purchasing a BJJ gi, carefully read the criteria for selecting the perfect BJJ gi for the right occasion.
2. Does Gi Color Matter in BJJ?
The color of the gi only matters when competing at IBJJF competitions because the IBJJF only allows athletes to wear white, blue, or black gis. But while you are training, the color of the gi does not matter. Most BJJ academies allow different gi colors, ranging from military green, yellow, pink, red, brown, gray, and everything in between. When signing up for a BJJ academy, check their gi color policies if they have any.
3. How Should a BJJ Gi Fit?
Like most clothing, it is important to find the right fit to ensure it is comfortable when worn. A BJJ gi should not be too loose nor too tight. When trying on the gi top, check how tight it feels around the torso. The lapels of a comfortably fitting gi will overlap without constricting around your neck. The next area to check for tightness is the sleeves. Your upper body and arms should be able to move freely in a gi. Many athletes choose a tight-fitting gi because they believe it will give them some advantage over their opponents. A tight gi is difficult to grab onto; however, it also limits the wearer’s movements and flexibility.
Check the length of the sleeves by extending your arms straight to the sides or in front of you. If your gi rides up more than 2 cm from your wrist joint, the sleeve length is not IBJJF-approved. As mentioned, the four-finger test is the easiest way to measure the sleeve length.
When buying a gi, it is best to try on it first. But because many high-quality gis are available online, wearers usually don’t get a chance to check how well they fit before buying. In this situation, be sure to consult the size chart. Take your measurements, then refer to the Elite Sports size chart. Many BJJ brands have different sizing scales, but you will find sleeve length, pant length, and measurements for different body types.
For gi pants, they should not fit like your regular pants. For BJJ, you need comfortable pants that allow you to move freely. Test for tightness in the knee area by bending your knees or squatting. In this position, check for any loose material to grab onto. If you feel restricted in your Gi pants, you may have picked the wrong size. The pant hems should reach your ankles. The four-finger test can help you determine the right pant length as well. If your Gi pants are longer and get stuck in your heels as you walk, fold up the pant hems or get a different size.
4. How to Shrink a BJJ Gi?
If you want to shrink a BJJ gi, wash it in warm or hot water and dry it in a dryer at high heat. Repeat the process if needed to get the right size. Washing a gi in cold water or drying it at low heat will cause minor shrinkage.
5. Should I Own More Than One Gi?
Yes. If you train multiple days a week, you will need more than one Gi to look presentable. Even if you do laundry after every training session to ensure you have a clean gi for the next class, having a spare gi always comes in handy on days when you might forget or did not have enough time to wash the gi.
6. How to Measure BJJ Gi Size?
Use Size Chart or Gi Sizes
To get the perfect gi fit, measure your height, body weight, waist, chest, arm length, and inseam. Elite Sports provides a comprehensive size chart to help you find the right size gi based on your body measurements, so be sure to consult the size charts before placing your order.
If measuring your dimensions is difficult, find a gi that will fit well with your body type to get the best size. Make sure to consider shrinkage while looking for the right gi size; consider getting a slightly larger size than you are used to.
Measure Your Body Dimensions
There are two ways to measure your body’s dimensions:
BJJ Gi Measurement Method 1
- Lay your gi on a flat surface and smooth out the wrinkles.
- Iron your gi at low heat to remove wrinkles.
- For the length of the sleeves, measure from sleeve to sleeve.
- For the length of the top, measure from the base of the lapel to the hem of the jacket.
- For the width of the chest, measure from the base of the left armpit to the base of the right armpit.
- For the length of the shoulders, measure from the top of the sleeve to the bottom.
- For the width of the bottom, measure from left to right of the gi’s bottom.
- For the length of the pant legs, measure from the waistband to the bottom of the pants.
- For inseam measurements, measure from the crotch seam to the bottom of the pant legs along the inside.
BJJ Gi Measurement Method 2
- For body measurements, you would need someone to take your measurements.
- For sleeve length, stand with both your arms extended out. Clench your hands into fists and have someone measure the length between both fists.
- For gi length, measure your height from the base of the neck to your upper thighs.
- For chest width, take the circumference of the widest section of your chest. Usually, the gi's bottom width is the same as the chest width. However, if you have a large belly, take the circumference of the widest section of your waist.
- For shoulder width, measure the circumference of your biceps while flexing.
- For the length of the pant legs, measure from the hips or the belly button down to the back of your ankles.
- For the width of the pants waist, measure the width of your waist.
- For the width of the pant legs, measure the circumference of your thighs.
- For the width of the pant crotch, measure the distance between the crotch area and where the seams of the pant legs meet.
- For inseam, measure from the length from the crotch seam down to the bottom of the pants using a measuring tape.
- After you complete the body measurements, input the measurements in the size calculator to get the correct sizing.
7. Do BJJ Gis Include Free Belts?
Not always. Luckily, Elite Sports offers a free white belt with all of their gis. However, for any of the colored belt levels, you would have to purchase a belt yourself.
8. What Materials Are BJJ Gis Made of?
BJJ gis are mostly made of durable cotton, canvas, and similar materials. Elite Sports gis are crafted from preshrunk CVC cotton and polyester blend, making them lightweight, comfortable, and long-lasting.
