2. Claudio Mattos’s Biography
Claudio Mattos is a renowned BJJ black belt under his mentor Vinicius Magalhaes, who is one of the most revered jiu-jitsu coaches in the world. Mattos earned a silver medal in the 2010 World Pro Championship after winning a gold medal in the Brazilian National Championship & South American Championship.
2.1. Early Details
Claudio Mattos was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil on the 16th July, 1981.
2.2. Nickname
Mattos earned the title “Caloca” among his friends due to his cartoon-like resemblance. As a result, he got his nickname “Caloquinha,” which means “Little Caloca.”
2.3. Jiu-Jitsu Training
Mattos was inspired by his brother, who was a dedicated Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. and started Jiu-Jitsu training at the age of 16.
2.4. Influence of Vinicius Magalhaes “Draculino”
Mattos was fortunate to train under Vinicius Magalhaes, who was renowned as “Draculino.” Magalhaes helped Mattos reach his full potential and become one of the best fighters and instructors in the BJJ world. He instilled great BJJ techniques and practices in Mattos that made him a person of high value.
2.5. Mentorship as a “Purple Belt”
Being a purple belt, Mattos started working as an assistant trainer of Master Magalhaes, a role he continues to this day.

Mattos is the head instructor at the Rio Sport Center, Belo Horizonte.
2.7. 1st Appearance in MMA as a Brown Belt
In 2004, he debuted in MMA against Igor Pitbull. Mattos quickly threw his opponent on the ground and concluded the match with Katagatame.

Mattos returned to MMA later at the beginning of 2005 in a fight against Andre Amado, and this impressive fight ended in a draw.

Mattos acquired the coveted black belt at the conclusion of 2005 from his mentor Vinicius Magalhaes..
2.10. Next MMA Venture and Transformation to Jiu-Jitsu
At the end of 2006, Mattos fought another MMA bout against Thomas Hytten and lost as a result of a cut. Since then, he committed only to BJJ, being very busy during 2008 & 2009.
2.11. Brazilian Trials and World Pro Cup Championship
In 2010, Mattos won the Brazilian Trials and also competed in the World Pro Cup Championship, UAE. He made it to the finals but was submitted by a successful sweep attempt by Durinho Burns.
2.12. “All Expenses Paid” Prize Trip to World Jiu-Jitsu Championships
In 2010, Mattos also won the SP Cup Tournament by ruthlessly submitting all of his opponents. He received an “All Expenses Paid” prize tour to the World Jiu-Jitsu Championships.

In an encounter between Claudio Mattos and Gilbert Burns that took place at the World Pro event in 2010, Mattos suffered a defeat by 2 points despite dominating his opponent.
