2. Lucas Barbosa’s Biography
Lucas Barbosa is one of the best BJJ black belt and mixed martial artists. He is a multiple-time World Champion commonly named "Hulk". Lucas’s favorite takedown and incredible pressure techniques have helped him gain popularity in Jiu-Jitsu.
Lucas Barbosa has made a mark in almost all of the most prestigious BJJ competitions in both Gi and No-Gi, including IBJJF Worlds, Pan American Championship, ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship, Asian Championship, and IBJJF International Open Championships. Barbosa bagged medals in all of the top tournaments and has emerged as one of the most decorated BJJ grapplers. He is also expected to enhance his MMA game and eventually rule the Octagon as well.
2.1. Lucas Barbosa's Early Life
Lucas Barbosa was born on February 13, 1992, in Boa Vista, Roraima, Brazil. In his early phase of life, Lucas Barbosa participated in basketball and swimming. Then, at the age of 10, Lucas took part in judo and taekwondo. He started his Jiu-Jitsu training at the age of 15 under Diego Lopes. Lucas practiced under the supervision of multiple coaches including Andre Fabiano and Marcio Rodrigues, who assisted him in earning the black belt in Jiu-Jitsu.
2.2. Lucas Barbosa’s BJJ Journey
Lucas Barbosa gained prominence in the sport after his exceptional grappling performance in the web-based show, “The Team” episodes. After that, Lucas won various top BJJ competitions, including Brazilian Nationals and IBJJF World Championships in the brown belt division.
2.3. Lucas Barbosa’s Promotion to Black Belt
As an accomplished grappler, Lucas successfully dominated gi and no-gi grappling circuits. On July 7, 2015, Lucas was promoted to black belt under André Fabiano. After a year, he moved to California and joined the Atos Jiu-Jitsu Academy to attract more attention in the top IBJJF tournaments.
2.4. Lucas Barbosa’s Grappling Record
The grappling record of Lucas Barbosa is highly impressive with 201 wins, including 78 submission wins. Lucas applied the submission numerous times through the armbar. Lucas defeated various top BJJ fighters, including Gabriel Almeida, Matheus Diniz, Patrick Gaudio, and Nicky Rod.
2.5. Lucas Barbosa’s Transition to MMA
In 2011, Lucas Barbosa debuted in mixed martial arts. He faced Geydson Cardoso, but unfortunately, lost the match due to a split decision. Then, in 2020, Lucas Barbosa announced his decision to return to mixed martial arts. His transition to MMA was actually due to financial incentives and his urge to face more challenges. He said:
“Unfortunately there is more money in MMA. I love jiu-jitsu, but if MMA gives me a better financial return, that is where I will be headed. I trained MMA for two years, from when I was 18 up to 20, and had 3 pro fights, Lucas explained.
“It was after this that I decided to turn my focus fully to BJJ, where I built my career, but right now, I want to test myself again. I’ve conquered most of the main titles in grappling already so it is a good time to turn towards MMA.”
“I’ve always sparred a bit in MMA and kept working on the pads. Lately, I’m just putting more emphasis on this. I turned the training up a bit, but I am still open to training in jiu-jitsu. When I have an MMA fight booked, that is when I will focus all my energy on MMA. I am not training full time, at the moment I train here at Atos [Headquarters in San Diego, CA] with a few training partners who have MMA experience, when I have a fight booked I will seek to do a camp somewhere, I am still studying the range of possibilities with regards to training,”He further added.
Though Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa has competed extensively in various tournaments throughout his BJJ career, the same cannot be said for his professional MMA career. Since his defeat in his debut bout in 2011, he has only competed in three more MMA fights out of which he only managed to win two.
In 2012, he faced Tiago Sena twice, outperforming his opponent both times. On August 11, 2012, Barbosa won the RSF - Roraima Show Fight 10 via TKO punches. Previously, he had won the RSF - Roraima Show Fight 09 on April 15, 2012, through a spectacular rear naked choke finish.
After these two bouts, Barbosa stayed away from the MMA scene despite winning, shifting all his energies to competing and winning the BJJ Championships. However, the better financial incentives and perks caused Barbosa to gravitate toward MMA Championships. In 2021, he announced his return to MMA.
Finally, in February 2022, it was announced that Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa would be facing Troy Green at the PFL Challenger Series 2. Unfortunately, Green withdrew from the fight and the promotion could not find a worthy replacement for Hulk.
Later in August, 2022, Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa was expected to compete against Elmar Umarov at PFL 7. This bout was also canceled because Umarov withdrew due to illness and no replacement for Barbosa was found.
Finally, in January 2023, Lucas Barbosa got the opportunity he had been waiting for years. He was scheduled to compete against Itso Babulaidze at PFL Challenger Series 9. Though Barbosa managed to dominate his opponent at the start, he was eventually subdued by Babulaidze and lost the fight via unanimous decision. Barbosa has yet to reappear on the MMA scene after this loss.
