2. Brianna Ste-Marie’s Biography

Brianna Ste-Marie, a Canadian BJJ black belt. She started her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu career at the age of 19 years old under the lineage of Frederic Koomsatira and Leonardo Saggioro. Ste-Marie received her black belt from Fabio Holanda. Brianna was also trained as a representative of BTT at Mizo Studio, a gym she enrolled at in 2021.

2.1.  Brianna Ste-Marie’s Early Life & Amateur Fighting

Ste-Marie was born on August 30, 1996, in Canada. She played rugby at a young age but did not commit to the sport until she was 11 years old. She enrolled in the 300 Rugby Academy. After receiving training, Ste-Marie joined the rugby club called St-Anne-de-Bellevue and entered the rugby league. During this time, Ste-Marie got the opportunity to become a part of Team Quebec during her trip to the U.K. In 2015, she played her last game around the same time was attending Concordia University.

Education

In 2015, Ste-Marie enrolled at Concordia University. In 2020, she graduated with a degree in Human Environment.

Introduction to BJJ

Ste-Marie’s father was a martial arts practitioner and introduced her to jiu-jitsu when she was 19 years old. Having been a part of the local Brazilian Top Team, Ste-Marie’s father persuaded his daughter to try one class. In 2016, Ste-Marie fell in love with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after her first class, quitting rugby to pursue a grappling career.

Brianna Ste-Marie’s Coaches

Sainte-Marie’s two instructors were Leonardo Saggioro and Frederic Koomsatira, Brazilian Top Team representatives. Saggioro was the most influential coach in Ste-Marie’s career as he encouraged her to compete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu even when Ste-Marie was having doubts.

2.2.  Brianna Ste-Marie’s BJJ Career

Promotion to Brown Belt

In December 2020, Ste-Marie was promoted to the rank of brown belt. In October 2021, Brianna would go on to become the bantamweight Combat Jiu-Jitsu Champion at the female-only jiu jitsu event, Medusa 1.

Won the Combat Jiu-Jitsu Flyweight Championship

In December 2020, after Ste-Marie was promoted to brown belt, she won the Combat Jiu-Jitsu Flyweight Championship after submitting Liz Tracy in the finals.

Won IBJJF No-Gi World Championship

At the 2021 IBJJF No-Gi World Championship, Ste-Marie won 1st place at the brown belt level.

Won American National Championship

At the 2021 American National Championship, Ste-Marie won at the brown belt level.

EBI Combat Worlds Tournament

At the 2021 EBI Combat Worlds Tournament in the 125 lbs weight division, Ste-Marie won first place.

EBI Combat Medusa Tournament

In 2021, Ste-Marie participated in EBI Combat Medusa Tournament in the 135 lbs weight division and won it.

Black Belt Promotion

In December 2021, Ste-Marie was promoted to black belt, bunder Holanda after she competed at the ADCC East Coast Trials. Brianna Ste-Marie has been under the instructorship of Lonardo Saggioro and Fabio Holanda from the start of her career till Black Belt's promotion.

Black Belt BJJ Career

After promoting to black belt, Ste-Marie won the 2nd ADCC North American Trials in April 2022, certifying for the ADCC World Championship. Ste-Marie won both the East and West Coast Trials and became the first woman in history to achieve it. She also defeated Bianca Basila at the 2022 ADCC World Championship in the semifinals and won the silver medal but lost to the current Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion Ffion Davies in the finals. Ste-Marie also competed in IBJJF Miami Open on April 29 and 30, 2023, winning two gold medals. She also won a bronze medal in the lightweight division of the 2023 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

2.3. Brianna Ste-Marie’s Historic Fights

Brianna Ste-Marie vs Clarie North

Ste-Marie faced Claire North at the 2022 World No-Gi Championship. At the start of the fight, Ste-Maire took North to the ground and tried to submit her using a leg lock in half guard position, but North managed to escape. Ste-Marie defeated North via a guillotine.

Brianna Ste-Marie vs Luiza Monteiro

Ste-Marie faced Luiza Monteiro twice at the 2023 World Championship. Ste-Marie won the first fight, but the second fight between her and Monteiro was more notable. For much of the fight, Ste-Marie and Monteiro were equally matched. Eventually, Ste-Marie won the first two points; however, Monteiro quickly followed by earning four points. In the end, Ste-Marie defeated Monteiro via a toe hold.

Brianna Ste-Marie vs Nikki Sullivan

Ste-Marie faced Nikki Sullivan at the 2022 World No-Gi Championship. Ste-Marie dominated from the start of the fight by breaking Sullivan’s half-guard. Sullivan also fought well by escaping most of Ste-Marie’s techniques, including the full-locked Kimura trap. But Ste-Marie defeated Sullivan in the end via a Kata Gatame.
