BJJ technical mount, commonly known as the modified mount, is one of the submission techniques in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This position provides many ways for you to initiate chokes on your opponent. This position is also versatile because it can be executed from many positions. If you are learning the BJJ technical mount position, you must know the top chokes that you can apply to your opponent. The top five chokes with which you can submit your opponent are explained here in this article.

1. BJJ Technical Mount

BJJ technical mount is the position in which you are mounted, and your opponent is up with both facing the same direction. BJJ technical mount can be called the king of all mounts in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Your opponent’s heels are near your back and kneeling downward on you. Once you have your opponent in the BJJ technical mount, you can make a lot of attacks, sweeps, and submissions on your opponent.

2. BJJ Technical Mount is Better Than Regular Mount

  • It is easier for your opponent to attack you when you are in a regular mount than when you are in a technical mount. If your opponent is lying flat on the mat, you may probably take your opponent to regular mount. Anytime you shift your opponent into the regular mount, your opponent can grab your foot and put you in the half guard. If your opponent is too big, probably 300 pounds, then their hips will be high.

  • If you are on their top then your knees will be going to float in the air. You will not be able to touch your knees to the mat. In that case, it will be even easier for your opponent to catch your foot and take you to half-guard. So, at any point, if you are in that position, modify your mount from regular mount to BJJ technical mount.

  • Establish your position in such a way that your hips align with your opponent’s head. So, if you go for the BJJ armbar, your hips will be in the correct position. You are behind your opponent. You are not too low. You are not too high. If you try to take their back, you can easily take it without the risk of getting caught by your opponent. You can lock your seat belt. Your chest is behind their back. All the attacks come from this position.

3.1 First Choke From the BJJ Technical Mount: Classic Choke

3.1.1 Put Your Arm Under Their Arm

To apply most chokes, you have to put your arm under their arm. This is easy to do because there is always some space there. Move your other hand and take it around your opponent’s neck. Make a curve with your hand around their neck. This curve will perfectly fit their neck. Your wrist will be connected to your opponent’s neck with that curve.

3.1.2 Grab the Lapel

So, from the hand which is underneath their arm, grab their lapel. After grabbing it, flip the lapel. Then, on the other hand, grab the flipped lapel. This will help you lock their neck.

3.1.3 Flip the Lapel

It is important to flip the lapel. This will make your fingers fit perfectly. Your grip will be good. If you don’t flip the lapel, your fingers will not be able to make a good grip. Your fingers will slip from the lapel, and this will cause a poor grip. You cannot choke your opponent with a poor grip on your opponent’s lapel now, as you have gripped your opponent’s lapel strongly.

3.1.4 Grab Your Opponent’s Head

Take your hand to the back of your opponent’s head. Also, make the curve shape with your hand at the back. This will help you fit your hand at the back of your opponent’s head.

3.1.5 Drive Your Opponent’s Chin Against Their Chest

Extend this arm and drive your opponent’s chin against their chest. That will be the motion this choke will drive if your one hand is at the back of your opponent’s head and the other hand is at the front around their neck. Now, after having this setup, move yourself up.

3.1.6 Move Yourself Up

Post it up using your back muscles and you have the choke on your opponent. You put your one hand around your opponent’s neck and the other hand at the back of their head. Make the curve with both your hands so that they can fit.

3.2 Second Choke From the BJJ Technical Mount: Cross Collar Choke

  • The second choke is based on the option that if you cannot get your arm through your opponent’s arms. They may be pinching their elbows against their ribs. So, there is no space between their elbows and ribs. At this stage, you can go for the cross-collar choke. Unlike in the previous choke, you should grab the bottom lapel.

  • Because your opponent is not giving you any space, so you have to grab the bottom lapel this time. You cannot move your hand deep beneath their arm to grab their head. With your other hand, cover their neck. Grip the upper lapel while crossing your arm around their neck. So now, you are gripping both their upper and lower lapel with both your hands.

  • Now, have a strong grip on both the lapels. Pull the bottom lapel toward their hips. Now pull the choke with both your hands and you have the choke. You may be thinking why the gripping the bottom lapel is even important.

  • This is because when you are choking, the only goal you have is to prevent your opponent from turning. Suppose you keep only one hand and grab your opponent’s neck while crossing around their neck, and you don't grab the bottom lapel.

  • Your opponent will turn themselves and roll on the mat, and your choke will not work. So it is important to use your both hands and grab both your opponent’s upper and bottom lapel. The other hand will stop your opponent from turning and facing you. Even if they try to roll themselves and get their belly down, they cannot do so because you are gripping their lapels.

3.3 Third Choke From the BJJ Technical Mount: BJJ Ezekiel Choke

  • The third choke is based on the option that if your opponent grabs your hand when you try to put it beneath their neck. If they grab your hand, you will not be able to control their lapels. So if you try to make previous, they will not work in this case.

  • So you have to find an alternative. That is where the third choke comes in. In the current scenario, shoot your arm through beneath their arm, grabbing your arm. When you pass your arm through them, grab your other hand.

  • Now, keep one arm beneath their neck and move the other arm over them. Push their neck with your other arm, and you will have the choke. This is known as the BJJ Ezekiel choke.

3.4 Fourth Choke From the BJJ Technical Mount: Bow and Arrow Choke

  • The fourth choke is the bow and arrow choke. You can apply this choke on your opponent if your opponent is not giving you any space for getting your arm beneath their arm. Your opponent may have attached their elbows tightly to their ribs.

  • So in this you cannot get your arms pass through their arm. You cannot grab their lapel. So you should grab their knee. Grabbing your opponent’s knee will prevent your opponent to go back down and unravel the choke you are trying to apply.

  • Now keep your one hand at the opponent’s knee and the other hand grabbing their lapel while crossing around their neck. Move yourself behind, sit down, flaring your foot to the outside. Throw your foot over your opponent. You can also trap your opponent’s arm with your foot which will provide you even more control over them.

  • Or if the situation is such that their hand is already on your hand trying to break your grip, throw your leg over their shoulder and criss cross your legs. Then, you will have your opponent in the bow and arrow choke.

3.5 Fifth Choke From the BJJ Technical Mount: Variation of Bow and Arrow Choke

  • The last choke is the variation of the previous choke, i.e., bow and arrow choke. Now, instead of sitting down and shooting your leg over their shoulder, do a mini squat and bring your shin behind their neck.

  • You have to make sure of one thing here your shin comes inside of your forearm, not outside of your forearm. So you are grabbing their knee with your one hand and their lapel with your other hand. Now, do a mini squat.

  • Follow the same process as the previous one. Keep your opponent’s head lower. Keep pushing their head down towards the mat. Now, as you do the mini squat, you should be able to get your opponent on top of you.

4. Last Words

  • These were the few chokes you can make when you have your opponent in the BJJ technical mount position. You can make many other chokes, such as triangle chokes. It all depends on you which choke you have learned the most.

  • It also depends on the situation. Select the choke based on the scenario. Everything is possible with the BJJ technical mount position. That is why it is known as the king of all mounts. First, learn the BJJ technical mount and various ways to get your opponent to the mount.
