2. Alex Sodré’s Biography

p>Alex Sodré is a BJJ Black Belt under Rodrigo Feijão. He is one of the fierce light featherweight champions. He is not only a famous name in IBJJF but also in the ACBJJ South American Championships, UAEJJF, and Abu Dhabi Grand Slam. He gained fame from his colored belt competitions.

2.1. Alex Sodré’s Early Life

Aex Sodré was born on 9 September 1996 in Manaus. He was brought up in Manaus, the Brazilian state of Amazonas.

2.2. Aimed For Soccer

As a child, Alex aimed for soccer. He wanted to become a professional soccer player. He played for a youth squad in a local soccer team. He was an athletic child and playing soccer refined his skills at a greater level.

2.3. How Alex Sodré Discovered BJJ?

Alex discovered BJJ when he saw a building with the sign “Jiu-Jitsu Academy”. He was actually walking home after his classes when he saw a man painting a wall of a Jiu-Jitsu academy. It was the first time in his life that he heard the term Jiu-Jitsu. Alex got curious and he asked the man about the academy and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

2.4. Got the Invitation to Jiu-Jitsu Academy

Little did Alex know that the main painting on the wall was the Academy’s coach, Othon Servalho. Servalho got fascinated by the kid’s questions and later invited him to the grand opening of the academy.

2.5. Othon Servalho - Alex Sodré’s Coach

Alex admired Servalho and decided to learn BJJ from him. Servalho knew that Alex had a spark and that this kid could make history. He started teaching him BJJ and even gifted Alex his first Gi as Alex wasn’t financially strong enough to afford one.


Servalho is responsible for creating Alex’s strong base in BJJ. Alex had great respect for his coach which he displayed by conquering many championships.

2.6. Looked For Opportunities Outside of Amazonas

Servalho was the reason that Alex won many competitions in Manaus. He decided to pursue BJJ as a professional career. But there wasn't much financial support that fighters got in the Amazonas. That is why Alex decided to look for opportunities outside of the Amazonas, in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. His coach Servalho fully supported him in this decision.

2.7. Wished To Train With Fabio Andrade

With the help of Master Laercio Fernandes, Alex got in touch with Fabio Andrade of Nova Uniao Bangu. Alex wanted to train with Fabio Andrade but as there was no space left for another fighter in Andrade’s team, Alex then turned to Rodrigo Feijão.

2.8. Trained With Rodrigo Feijão

Alex Sodré then started training with Rodrigo Feijão, one of the famous Black Belt of his time. Rodrigo was involved in a scholarship program in Maringa, the state of Parana. He instantly allowed Alex Sodré to train with his team. And later on, he allowed Alex to become a member of his BJJ house.

2.9. Moved in With Rodrigo Feijão

Rodrigo Feijão was running a team where all of his students lived under the same roof. Alex was on a 3 months probation during his training. After the end of the probation, Alex was invited to live in the house with other 14 practitioners.

2.10. Advantage of Living With Grapplers

Living in the same house with Rodrigo Feijão and the other 14 grapplers turned out to be really fruitful for Alex. All the practitioners along with Alex had the same goal, conquering world championships. Practicing BJJ 24/7 made Alex one of the most accomplished BJJ grapplers.

3. The Reason Behind Alex Sodré’s Exceptional Fighting Style

The answer lies in his background and the unique training methods that he has developed over the years. Born in Brazil, Alex Sodré was introduced to martial arts at a young age. This early training gave him a solid foundation in the basics of fighting and helped him develop a deep understanding of body mechanics and leverage.


But it wasn’t just his diverse training that made Sodré's fighting style exceptional. He also developed a unique training regimen that focused on improving his speed, agility, and reflexes. Sodré would spend hours each day practicing BJJ techniques. This allowed him to react quickly to his opponent’s movements and dodge takedowns and submissions.

5. Alex Sodré's BJJ Combats

5.1. Promoted to Blue Belt

Alex was promoted to Blue Belt in 2013 and as a Blue Belt, he won many tournaments inside the Manaus circuit.

5.2. Won Bronze Medal as a Brown Belt

Alex Sodré won a Bronze Medal at the CBJJ Brazilian National Championship as a Brown Belt in 2018.

5.3. Promoted to Black Belt Before His Mundial Camp

After winning the Bronze Medal Alex’s coach, Rodrigo Feijão, decided to promote Alex Sodré to the Black Belt level. He, along with other practitioners, decided to surprise Alex with a celebratory function. It was before Alex’s trip to the United States for the Mundial camp.


It was a ploy to invite Alex to the academy in the name of a photo shoot. It was all arranged by Alex’s coach. Rodrigo Feijão then promoted Alex Sodré to the Black Belt level.

5.4. IBJJF World No-Gi Champion

Alex Sodré won the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship as a Black Belt in 2019.

5.5. IBJJF Pan Champion

In 2022, Alex won the IBJJF Pan Championship as a Black Belt.

Daniel Maira is a BJJ Black Belt under Mikey Musumeci. He is the co-founder of the academy, Movement Art Jiu-Jitsu in Philadelphia. He was already an accomplished Brown Belt competitor.


At the start of the match, Daniel gained 2 points by knee on belly method. Alex leveled the scores and gained 2 points. Daniel gained 2 more points but lost the match due to Alex’s successful 50/50 Armbar submission attack.


Alex submitted Daniel Maira via 50/50 Armbar in 1 minute and 13 seconds.
