Meyram Maquiné was always interested in martial arts. He was involved in competitive sports from a young age. He started capoeira when he was only 5 years old. It was mainly because his father was a capoeira practitioner.
Capoeira is a combination of dance, acrobatics, and music. It is actually considered an Afro-Brazilian martial art.
2.3. Started BJJ
Meyram quickly became fascinated by capoeira and decided to learn the actual martial art. He was only 5 or 6 years old when he enrolled in a BJJ class. Meyram really admired capoeira techniques that taught him kicking and some other moves. Being a Brazilian, the native Brazilian fighting spirit was in his blood and he knew that sooner or later he had to satisfy the fighting quest.
But it was fortunate enough for Meyram that he fell in love with the grappling sport. It was his love that made him such a staunch and famous grappler in no time.
2.4. Trained Under Alcenor Alves
Meyram got BJJ training under Alcenor Alves. Alves was the one who instantly recognized Meyram’s talent and gave his full attention to that young struggling child. Alves knew that Meyram was a young talent who under the right coach would bring fame to not only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but also for himself.
2.5. Transferred to Sao Paulo
Alves taught Meyram every technique he was skilled in. But he wanted more for his hard-working and deserving student. He had full trust in his student’s competence. He therefore encouraged Meyram to train with a more accomplished and skilled team outside of Manaus i.e., in São Paulo.
He relocated Meyram to the Sao Paulo estate so that Meyram would practice with a greater BJJ team as well as gain more awareness about the BJJ competitive circuit.
