2. Jansen Gomes’ Biography
Jansen Gomes is a BJJ black belt under his father Antonio “Bode” Carlos. Gomes trained under Professor Ricardo and Leonardo Vieira while representing CheckMat Jiu-Jitsu. He joined a BJJ program led by Ricardo “Ricardinho” Vieira. Gomes is an active grappler who has competed in multiple color belt divisions. His brother, Jonata Gomes, is also an active grappler who represents CheckMat Academy internationally.
2.1. Jansen Gomes's Early Life
Gomes was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on October 20, 2001. He was raised in the Comunidade do Cantagalo in the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro, where the community is known for producing world champions. The credit goes to the hardworking nature of the native people.
2.2. Influenced By his Father and Coach
Carlos, Gomes’s father, is a BJJ black belt and the reason behind Gomes’ successful grappling career. During Gomes’s childhood, he watched his father practice BJJ techniques that later caught the attention of the young talent. Being an athletic child, Gomes started jiu-jitsu at a very young age, with his father becoming Gomes’s first BJJ instructor.
2.3. Joining Coach Ricardo Vieira’s BJJ Social Project
Gomes met Ricardo Vieira through his father as Vieira was once Carlos’s teacher. Gomes joined Vieira’s social project in Cantagalo while actively training at Fightzone Academy in Copacabana. The social project focused on the development of teenagers who wished to learn jiu-jitsu.
2.4. Trained Under Leonardo Vieira and Lucas Leite
Gomes moved to the United States to learn more about IBJJF competitions. In the U.S, Gomes trained under Leonardo Vieira and Lucas Leite, the teachers at CheckMat Jiu-Jitsu.
3. Jansen Gomes’ BJJ Matches
3.1. Gomes’s Success as a Yellow Belt
Soon after starting jiu-jitsu, Gomes was awarded his yellow belt. Gomes then started competing at the Mirim age group (6 to 7 years old) and won his first national title. This success boosted Gomes’s confidence.
3.2. 2019 IBJJF World Championship as a Purple Belt
As a purple belt, Gomes began to compete in international championships. Gomes won first place at the 2019 IBJJF World Championship.
3.3. 2021 IBJJF World Championship No-Gi
At the 2021 IBJJF World Championship No-Gi, Gomes won first place in the brown belt division.
3.4. Promoted to Black Belt
At the 2021 IBJJF World Championship, Gomes was also promoted to a black belt by his father, Carlos, while Gomes was standing at the 1st position on the podium.

At the 2023 IBJJF European Open Championship, Gomes won first place as a black belt.

4. Jansen Gomes’ Historic Fights
4.1. Jansen Gomes Vs. Andy Varela
Andy Varela is a 10th Planet BJJ black belt under Casey Halstead. Varela and Gomes competed at the Who’s Next (WNX), hosted by Who’s Number One (WNO), on July 14, 2022. This competition is a submission fighter challenge that only allows submission techniques. At the start of the fight, Varela went for Gomes’s head. Varela tried to grab ahold of Gomes’s head, but Gomes managed to escape every single time. Gomes played defensively at the start of the fight to learn Varela’s fighting style. Eventually, Gomes submitted Varela via an armlock within seven minutes.

4.2. Jansen Gomes Vs. Bruno Tosto
Bruno Tosto is a BJJ black belt who competed against Gomes at the finals of the 2022 IBJJF Victoria Open Championship. Gomes went for an armbar two minutes into the match, but Tosto managed to defend himself very well and got out of the submission. Gomes was dominating throughout the match, even maintaining back control. Unfortunately, Tosto’s defense was too strong. Unfortunately, Tosto couldn’t defend himself forever, and Gomes eventually submitted Tosto via an armbar and won the finals.

4.3. Jansen Gomes Vs. James McClughen
James McClughen is a BJJ black belt under Mark Turner, known for his defensive fighting style. Gomes tried to initiate the single-leg takedown, but McClughen managed to escape. McClughen tried to escape Gomes’ strong hold but tapped out upon submission. Eventually, Gomes applied a kimura and forced McClughen to tap out. Gomes submitted McClughen via a kimura in only one minute and 35 seconds. This match marked Gomes becoming the 2019 IBJJF World Champion as a purple belt.

5. Jansen Gomes’s Performance at the 2023 IBJJF World Championship
At the 2023 IBJJF World Championship, Gomes won the gold medal in the middleweight division and won first place by defeating the undefeated BJJ champion, Tainan Dalpra. Gomes competed in the middleweight division and won the gold medal. He also defeated Tye Ruotolo, WNO Middleweight and Welterweight Champion, in the semifinals and the undefeated BJJ champion, Tainan Dalpra, in the finals.
In the finals of the championship, Gomes won against Dalpra by advantage and broke Dalpra’s 60 match winning streak. It was the most important fight of the whole championship. It shocked the audience and the whole BJJ community and proved what Gomes is capable of.
6. FloGrappling Who's Next Series
Gomes was one of the 16 contestants on the reality show broadcasted by FloGrappling, Who’s Next: Submission Fighter Challenge. Gomes also competed at the Who’s Next Championship because of his contract with FloGrappling.
