2.11. Joao Gabriel’s Grappled with Death
In early 2014, Rocha was hit in the groin area during training, and his pain persisted for some time. Although he felt severe pain after every training session, he didn’t pay more attention to it.
“I have been kicked before but nothing ever hurt like that, “I thought the pain would go away, but it didn’t.”
After medical diagnosis, the devastating news was revealed that he had a tumor (Testicular Cancer) and would need to undergo chemotherapy and surgery for recovery. The once fierce fighter, who always stood tall in the center ring on the mat with hands held high in victory, now found himself facing a brutal opponent, cancer. Doctors told him that he had an aggressive tumor that spread from the abdomen to the lungs.
Joao Rocha gathered all his willpower to again stand up on the mat. This diagnosis was a crushing blow for him, but Rocha refused to be defeated. He steeled himself for the grueling battle ahead, knowing that the fight for his life would be the toughest of all.
“I looked at chemo treatments as if they were part of my job, and my job was to get well so I could train again.”
Although this process is not easy for anyone who undergoes chemo sessions five times a week. During this painful but necessary treatment, the vein disappears, and loss of hair and immunity, leaves one feeling weak and vulnerable. But Rocha fought on, determined to overcome the pain and the side effects of the treatment. He knew that the road to recovery would be long and difficult, but he was willing to put in the work to reclaim his life.

The grueling treatment of cancer lasted five months, during which he was unable to train Jiu-Jitsu and that was more devastating for a passionate grappler.
“It was a very difficult time for me,” Joao admits. “I’ve been doing BJJ since before I was three years old. Jiu-jitsu was my life, and during my treatments, I felt as if I had no life.”

Despite the setback, Rocha approached his treatment with a positive attitude and determination. However, returning to training after intense treatment proved to be a very difficult feat. Joao Rocha struggled while doing BJJ training to again secure his leading position but lost at Pan American Championship.
This defeat never put down his fortitude. Joao Gabriel continued his struggle and secured the runner-up spot at the World Championship.
