2. Roberto Jimenez’s Biography
On May 19, 2000, in Miami, Florida, United States of America, Roberto Jimenez was born. His parents were from Ecuador, South America. Raul “Gaucho” Jimenez, Roberto’s father, was a dedicated Muy Thai boxing practitioner who began training in jiu-jitsu in 2001.
Roberto is a promising young grappler with a bright future ahead of him. When Roberto earned a double gold medal at the 2018 IBJJF Worlds at the age of 18, he became a BJJ purple belt teenage star.
2.1. Roberto Jimenez’s Early life and Amateur Fighting
Roberto’s father, Raul Jimenez first enrolled young Roberto in a BJJ class when he was four years old. The Jimenez family had returned to the United States by the time Roberto was 10, residing in Texas. Roberto spoke little to no English at the time as his native tongue was Spanish. It was a handicap that made him a target of school bullies for a long time.
Roberto did not earn his first gold medal until he was 13 years old despite being a passionate competitor since childhood. Earning his first victory in 2013, Roberto started devoting more time to training than he had before.
2.2. Roberto Jimenez’s Historic Fights
In 2015, Roberto was competing weekly in a variety of divisions, including the teen division (absolute + weight, gi + no-gi) and the adult division (absolute + weight, gi + no-gi). He took home up to eight medals in total due to attending so many events.
In 2016, after competing in the Royal Invitational, a professional tournament where the biggest fighters of the colored belt divisions battled for a cash reward. Roberto made his first appearance in front of a large BJJ audience at the age of 15.
Being the youngest competitor on the BJJ professional stage , Roberto took home the trophy, defeating many of the sport’s brightest stars by submissions such as Gabriel Sousa, Thalison Soares, and Gabriel Almeida.
Roberto’s fame as a fighter skyrocketed after his first appearance at the Royal.
Brown Belt Promotion
In August 2018, Roberto was promoted to brown belt level, given to him by Raul Jimenez and Romero Jacare Cavalcanti during the Alliance Seminar. In an interview, he disclosed his submission breakdown in the matches, saying he had “two flying armbars, one loop choke, one omoplata, one Ezekiel choke and a collar choke from the back.”
Black Belt Promotion
Roberto Jimenez was upgraded to black belt by his father, Mr Raul Jimenez, after a string of victories in every colored belt competitive year.
Roberto won in the Free Weightclass Division at the No-Gi World Championship in December 2019.
He won with more points in his black belt premiere match against a veteran, Keenan Cornelius. He finished his inaugural season with a 30-10 record, including 22 submission victories.
The most surprising aspect of the achievements is that Roberto accomplished them all through submissions. That is 10 submissions in 10 bouts against the finest purple belts in the world.
