Leon Edwards has recently announced his plans to play in the Octagon again. He aims to hold the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) title again. He recently lost his welterweight championship title to Belal Muhammad.
34-year-old Leon Edwards is an American Mixed Martial Artist (MMA) who competes in the welterweight division of the UFC. According to current UFC rankings, he is ranked 9 in pound-for-pound and number one in the welterweight division.
Leon won the welterweight title by defeating Kamaru Usman in 2022. This was one of the famous wins which resulted in Leon winning the UFC 278 title. Months later, both fighters confronted each other again in the ring. Leon also won that match comfortably.
Leon played against Belal on the 28th of July, 2024. Previously, they played against each other in 2021, when Belal got eye poking, due to which the match was stopped. Three years later, both stars fought in the ring, and Leon lost his welterweight championship title to Belal, who is not even in the top 15 rankings of the UFC welterweight division.
Leon is still craving for his lost title as a few months after his defeat, he posted a video on his social media account with a caption:
“I want to be 2x champion.”
Leon Edwards had not lost a fight in the last nine years. He said he was used to getting that feeling of being a champion.
“I have not lost a fight now in like nine years. So, I was getting used to that feeling again. I feel like I hate losing more than one, but I love winning. You know there is not much you can do now, you know, just move on from that. You put it behind you, and for me, it is more about what is next and how you get to the back to where you want to get to.”
His title loss against Belal was a setback for him as he is currently the number-one ranked welterweight fighter in the world. Leon hopes to regain his lost title by the end of the year 2025.
While talking about his goals, he said that his goal is to win the title again by the end of this year or probably next year this time.
“My goal right now is to obviously get the belt back. I would love to be the champion again by the end of the year, next year. Around this time next year. So, just putting steps in place. My goal is to be a two-time world champion.”
