Marcelo Garcia is preparing to make a comeback in ONE championship submission grappling. Fans are excited after hearing this news and are waiting to see him in ONE championship.
On November 11, 2024, he signed a contract with ONE Championship to compete in submission grappling.
Marcelo Garcia is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend, a submission grappler who has won 5 world Jiu-Jitsu championships and 4 Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) championships. He is the holder of a 4-degree black belt. He is a member of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Hall of Fame and the ADCC Hall of Fame.
Marcelo Garcia was suffering from various health issues. These issues stopped him from competing in submission grappling for a long time. He moved to Instagram earlier, asking his fans to pray for him. He wrote on his Instagram post:
“I’m about to fight the biggest fight of my life; I have stomach cancer and will start chemo for 3 months and back at MSK for surgery to remove the tumor. Please keep me and my family in your prayers. Get your checkups, and listen to your body. All I had was hiccups after eating, and I’m glad I saw a doctor. I just wanted to thank everyone for supporting me now; you all know who you are, and I will never forget it.”
In 2023, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Fortunately, after having some chemotherapy sessions, he was able to tap out cancer.
He also explained the reason for choosing the ONE championship over other championships. He said he had rejected several organizations' offers to invite him to compete. He chose ONE because Leo Vieira, the vice president of the ONE Championship, admired and appreciated him. He said that he wants to have admiration and appreciation from people, which Leo gave him. He said he is very close to him and his family, so he chose ONE championship over other competitions. He also said he is not retired and has never said ‘retired.’
Fans are very excited after ONE Championship made this announcement on Instagram.
He played in his last match in 2011 at the ADCC championship and won the gold. Since then, he has not played any other game. He will be making his professional debut in the ONE Championship.
